The state of Jammu and Kashmir has three distinct climatic regions viz., Arctic cold desert areas of Ladakh, temperate Kashmir valley and sub-tropical region of Jammu. The weather of Ladakh remainschilly and cold for most time of the year. Ladakh’s climate is a little extreme – the summers can get a little harsh with direct sunlight falling at such a high altitude and winters can be really cold, with temperatures dropping below freezing point.

    Summer Season      

    Summers are usally from starting May to ending August. Summer in KashmirJune to September is the best time to visit as it is the only season when the passes are open. The temperature is cool and can go up to 33°C. Summers are the ideal time to go to Leh as the skies are clear and offers panoramic views of the mountains. The average day temperature ranges from 20° to 30°C. Most highways open up the last week of April or the first week of May. Temperatures are a pleasant 16°C during the day and a barely manageable 3°C in the night. -

    Winter Season      
    Winter season usally lasts from October to May. Cold frost bites and snowfall are common occurrence, making it a very inhospitable climate for visiting the place. During this season, the mercury level comes down to very well below 0°C and the whole area is covered with snow. In peak winters the temperature in Ladakh goes down to - 30 Degree Celsius in Leh and Kargil and - 50 Degree Celsius in Dras. Temperatures remain in minus for almost 3 months from December to February..
